Europe 500-1500 CE
Political
During the post classical era, Europe was mainly a feudal society where the kings granted land to his nobles and lesser lords. The lords received land by doing military service. Form of manorial system. By the year 1000, feudalism changed into centralized feudalism which eventually turned into centralized monarchies during the middle ages.
Economic
The 3 field system created improvement agriculturally. Merchant class grew larger due to the Crusades and Mongol trade. Commercial revolution. Manorial system ensured that work would get done on farms by the serfs.
Religion
Roman Catholicism devotion was common in Europe, it ran deep with in an individuals political, social, and economic power. Human reason was used to prove someones faith in 1095. Pagan practices blended with Christianity. The Crusades.
Social
European social status was divided into 5 classes. The kings sat atop, followed by the lords, then the lesser lords, knights, and then the serfs. The top 3 owned land while the knights and the serfs "worked" to move up in the social rankings. The setup of the classes began to change after 1000 CE because of an increase in artisan and merchant involvement.
Intellectual
By the late 1100s, Gothic architecture began to replace Romanesque architecture. Urban growth stated specialized commerce and manufacturing. Monks/Priests were the most literate. By the 12th century, students studied law, theology, and philosophy in universities.
Artistic
Christianity was a common theme in architecture and literature. Themes from the past were included in vernacular literature. Architecture was based on Romanesque until changing to Gothic styles in the 1100s. Secular themes in artwork.
Near Geography
Geography in Europe is diverse and covers a lot of land. Europe contains mountains, plateaus, coastal areas, and plains in the north. People navigated Europe by rivers.
